EN 149 explained: FFP masks, NR, R and D

Every FFP mask carries a marking to EN 149. Here you read what the standard tests, how to classify FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3, what NR, R and D mean and what the print on the mask says.

What EN 149 regulates

EN 149 (edition 2001+A1:2009) sets requirements for filtering half masks that protect against particles, that is masks in which the filter material forms the mask itself. Among other things it tests the retention of the filter material, total inward leakage, resistance under longer loading, flammability and breathing resistance. The individual test values are in the text of the standard. The masks are category III PPE and therefore carry the CE marking with the identification number of the notified body under Regulation (EU) 2016/425.

FFP1, FFP2, FFP3

The class says how well the mask holds back particles and how much leakage is permitted. FFP1 is the lowest, FFP3 the highest level. For selection at work the maximum permitted multiple of the workplace exposure limit under DGUV Rule 112-190 counts: FFP1 up to 4 times, FFP2 up to 10 times, FFP3 up to 30 times.

Highest permitted multiple of the workplace exposure limit under DGUV Rule 112-190 (November 2021 edition), table 2. Rows without a device of their own: the alternative is the same type of mask with particle filter P3, which covers every lower multiple.

NR, R and D

The full marking reads for example “FFP2 NR D”. The service life is in the instructions for use.
CodeMeaning
NRNot reusable (single use, “non-reusable”): intended for one shift only.
RReusable: for more than one shift, according to the manufacturer's instructions for use.
DDolomite clogging test passed. This is an optional test. Masks with D are more comfortable to breathe through after longer use in dusty environments.

What must be on the mask

  • Standard and class, for example “EN 149:2001+A1:2009 FFP2 NR D”.
  • CE marking with the identification number of the notified body. For AirGuard Pro that is 2834 (CCQS).
  • Name of the manufacturer and type designation.

How to recognise genuine masks and counterfeits: Recognising genuine FFP masks. The certificates behind the identification number are shown in EU type-examination certificate explained.

Limits of an FFP mask

  • Particles only: An FFP mask does not protect against gases and vapours. For that you need a gas or combination filter.
  • Face seal: a beard or sideburns in the sealing area prevent protection, see Face seal and beards.
  • Valve: The valve lowers breathing resistance when exhaling. It does not change the protection level.

Frequently asked questions

What does FFP2 NR D mean?

FFP2 is the protection class, NR means not reusable (single use for one shift), D means dolomite clogging test passed.

What is the difference between FFP2 and FFP3?

FFP3 is the higher level. Under DGUV Rule 112-190 FFP2 is permitted up to 10 times and FFP3 up to 30 times the workplace exposure limit.

Does an FFP mask protect against vapours?

No. FFP masks hold back only particles. Against vapours you need a gas filter.

How long may I wear an FFP mask?

That depends on work, climate and device. Guide values are in Wearing time and recovery.

Why is there a number behind the CE marking?

It is the identification number of the notified body that monitors production. For AirGuard Pro that is 2834 (CCQS).
