Face seal and beards: when the mask seals

The best mask only protects if it seals. A beard or sideburns in the sealing area let unfiltered air past the mask. That is why the face seal is checked before every use.

What the DGUV rule says

Under DGUV Rule 112-190, people with a beard or sideburns in the sealing area of full-face and half masks are unsuitable for wearing these masks. The rule makes no distinction by beard length; even short stubble can disturb the seal.

The sealing area is the surface on which the mask edge rests on the face: for the half mask over the bridge of the nose, cheeks and under the chin, for the full-face mask all round the face over forehead, temples, cheeks and chin.

Checking the face seal before every use

  1. Put the mask on and adjust the straps so that it sits firmly and comfortably.
  2. Place the palm of your hand over the exhalation valve and exhale slowly.
  3. If air escapes at the mask edge, reposition the mask and tighten the straps.
  4. Repeat the check until no more air escapes. Only then enter the hazard area.

This is how the instructions for use of the AirGuard Pro masks describe it. Whether a mask model suits the face at all can also be checked with a fit test and in a wearing trial with samples. See Fit test.

Glasses, helmet, hearing protection

Glasses arms under the edge of a full-face mask disturb the seal. With half masks, glasses must not press on the mask or shift it. Wear helmet, earmuffs and safety glasses so that the mask sits unchanged, and check the face seal with the complete equipment.

When a mask does not fit

For employees who cannot wear a tight-fitting mask, for example with a beard, there are powered air-purifying respirators with a hood that does not seal on the face. They are not part of the AirGuard Pro range. We are happy to advise you on the options.

Frequently asked questions

May I wear a respirator with designer stubble?

Not if the stubble lies in the sealing area. DGUV Rule 112-190 makes no distinction by beard length; even short stubble can disturb the seal. Shaving before the start of the shift is safest.

How do I check that the mask seals?

Place the palm of your hand over the exhalation valve and exhale slowly. If air escapes at the mask edge, reposition the mask and tighten the straps. Before every use.

Can I wear a full-face mask with glasses?

Normal glasses arms lie in the sealing area and disturb the seal. Talk to us if employees need vision correction.
