Five features on the mask and the pack
- Standard: EN 149:2001+A1:2009 is printed on the mask. It sets the requirements for filtering half masks against particles.
- Class: FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3. The higher the number, the fewer particles get through filter and face seal.
- CE mark with a four-digit number: it names the notified body that monitors production. A category III mask is not permitted without it.
- NR or R, optionally D: NR means “non-reusable” and applies to one shift. R means reusable. D shows that the mask passed the dolomite dust test and stays breathable under heavy dust loading.
- Manufacturer, article number, instructions for use: both belong in every pack, together with storage notes and an expiry date.
Total inward leakage: filter and face seal together
A mask protects only as well as it seals. The standard therefore tests not only the filter material but also total inward leakage: the share of air that reaches the inside from outside through filter, mask edge and valve. The permitted maximum is 22 % for FFP1, 8 % for FFP2 and 2 % for FFP3. The test is run with test subjects while they move.
Total inward leakage is a laboratory test value. In use, what counts is whether the mask fits your face. A fit test and a wearing trial with samples show that.

The protection levels come from DGUV Rule 112-190 (Germany): an FFP1 mask may be used up to 4 times the occupational exposure limit, FFP2 up to 10 times and FFP3 up to 30 times. More in FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3: which class do I need?
Purchasing checklist
- The EU declaration of conformity and instructions for use are available (for AirGuard Pro under Data sheets).
- The number on the mask matches the notified body in the declaration of conformity.
- Class, NR/R and D match what the risk assessment requires.
- With or without valve, with or without activated carbon: the design suits the task.
- Sample masks were worn on site before a large quantity is ordered.
Frequently asked questions
What does NR mean on an FFP mask?
NR stands for “non-reusable”. The mask is meant for one working shift and is then disposed of. R masks may be used for longer if the instructions for use allow it.
What does D mean on an FFP mask?
D shows that the mask passed the dolomite dust test. Breathing resistance stays within the permitted range even under heavy dust loading.
How high may total inward leakage be?
Under EN 149 at most 22 % for FFP1, 8 % for FFP2 and 2 % for FFP3.
What is the number behind the CE mark?
The identification number of the notified body that monitors manufacture. It is mandatory for category III masks.
